Overview: Alaska cosmetology board and license
If you’re pursuing an Alaska cosmetology license or opening a shop, know that Alaska regulates these services through the Alaska Board of Barbers and Hairdressers within the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (DCCED). Alaska uses the title “hairdresser” for what many states call “cosmetologist,” and licenses are issued for specific scopes (hairdresser, esthetician, manicurist, barber, etc.). Key board pages: Board home, Applications & Forms, and Exam Information. Licenses renew on August 31 of odd-numbered years. ([commerce.alaska.gov](https://www.commerce.alaska.gov/web/cbpl/ProfessionalLicensing/BoardofBarbersHairdressers?utm_source=openai))

Alaska salon regulations (shops, signage, and business basics)
- Shop license required: Operate only in a shop or school licensed under AS 08.13 and 12 AAC 09; apply on Form 08‑4191. If an owner is not a licensed practitioner, they must employ a manager who is. ([commerce.alaska.gov](https://www.commerce.alaska.gov/web/Portals/5/pub/BAH_Stats_Regs.pdf))
- State business license: Each shop owner and independent booth/chair renter must hold an Alaska Business License. Start here: “Buy a Business License.” ([commerce.alaska.gov](https://www.commerce.alaska.gov/web/cbpl/ProfessionalLicensing/BoardofBarbersHairdressers/ApplicationsForms))
- Signage and local zoning: Check your municipality’s sign and land-use rules. For Anchorage, see Title 21 sign regulations and permitting portal. For signs near state roads, see Alaska DOT right-of-way permit contacts. ([ecode360.com](https://ecode360.com/49428054?utm_source=openai))
Inspections & sanitation
State sanitation standards for hair and body art facilities are in 18 AAC 23; violating 18 AAC 23 is grounds for discipline under 12 AAC 09.175. DEC’s Hair/Nails/Esthetics page links the controlling regulations. Municipalities may add local permits/inspections (e.g., Municipality of Anchorage requires a Beauty/Barber permit and conducts opening inspections; current fee $150). Reciprocity/endorsement (out-of-state)
Alaska does not have reciprocity. Apply by “waiver of examination”: you must hold a current license from another state, have passed a written exam there, and meet Alaska’s training minimums for your license type (e.g., hairdresser 1,650 school hrs or 2,000 apprenticeship hrs; esthetician 350 hrs; non-chemical barber 1,350/1,600 hrs; manicurist 12-hr course; advanced manicurist 250 hrs). Provide license verification sent directly by the issuing state. ([commerce.alaska.gov](https://www.commerce.alaska.gov/web/cbpl/ProfessionalLicensing/BoardofBarbersHairdressers/FAQs))

- Processing time: Complete applications typically 3–4 weeks; incomplete 4–6 weeks or longer. ([commerce.alaska.gov](https://www.commerce.alaska.gov/web/cbpl/ProfessionalLicensing/BoardofBarbersHairdressers/FAQs?utm_source=openai))
