How long does it take to get the license?

Neither DOH nor DCA guarantees a specific processing time. Timelines vary based on completeness of your submission and, for HHAs, the Certificate of Need process.

What happens if I don't renew on time?

Failure to renew can result in lapse of authority to operate and enforcement action. HHAs renew annually under N.J.A.C. 8:42-2.2; HCSFs renew annually under N.J.A.C. 13:45B. N.J.A.C. 8:42-2.2 ; N.J.A.C. 13:45B-7.1 .

Is insurance mandatory for obtaining the license?

Yes. Both HHAs and HCSFs are expected to maintain appropriate liability and workers’ compensation coverage consistent with state law and their regulatory standards.

Do I need to conduct background checks on my staff?
